The EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM has multiple lens groups moving during zooming, allowing for excellent delineation to be obtained at all focal lengths. It uses a 58mm filter thread unlike the Mk II AFD version, which employs the 52mm type. Many of Canon's Ring USM lenses, whether single focal lengths and zooms, use the 58mm thread, so filter compatibility is not a problem.

As mentioned earlier, this lens is easy to carry around and is great to use for candid and glamour photography. In fact, I had used this lens together with the EF 75-300mm IS USM zoom and Canon EOS 5 camera for the Malaysian leg of the 2000 season of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) championship that was held at the Sepang F1 circuit. This photo of one of the Hong Kong drivers, Henry Lee and friend, was shot at the lens' 70mm focal length.

Henry Lee and friend

Zooming from 28mm to the 105mm focal length for candid photography is one of the easiest tasks ever - look at these two photos below, the first shot showed two cars at one of the pits with the glamour girls as well as several crew members in the background. The second shot only has one car, two glamour girls and one crew member. This will give you an idea of how versatile the EF 28-105mm zoom lens really is.

At 28mm w/built-in flash

For the third shot (above, left), the glamour girls were photographed in the morning when the sun was still shining bright. But the atmosphere turned bluish when the sun disappeared behind the clouds in the afternoon, prompting the use of the EOS 5's built-in flash to provide fill-in illumination for the fourth shot (above, right).

For this candid photo below, it was a matter of getting to a lower angle, framing the subjects in their surroundings with the appropriate focal length (35mm) and shoot. The 35mm focal length, being a wide-angle, gave the usual exaggerating perspective distortion by making the Formula 2000 parts in the foreground larger than the people in this photo.

One of the Porsche cars in the pit

The Porsche car (above) was photographed at the lens' 28mm setting with the P mode of the EOS 5, handheld. The lighting was mixed, with daylight coming in from the left side and fluorescent inside the pit, as evident by the greenish effect of the background.
