With focal lengths of 28-105mm, this zoom lens is probably the last option that any EOS user will be thinking of using for sports photography. Even though I had the afore-mentioned EF 75-300mm IS USM, I couldn't resist using the EF 28-105mm zoom lens for some shots of the race cars in action, first at the wider end and then at the telephoto angle. These two photos are examples of that effort.

The above photos were photographed near Turn One of the Sepang F1 circuit where focal lengths of between 100-200mm is sufficient for the action shots. I don't know about other countries but here in Malaysia, the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM zoom lens is one of the favorites among Press photographers as well as freelancers who couldn't afford the more expensive EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM version. A few days after the AFOS championship, I had the opportunity to further test the EF 28-105mm lens at a Press Conference of up-and-coming Singaporean artiste, Sun Yan Zi.

The camera used this time was the Canon EOS-1N RS since the EOS 5 was a unit that had been loaned out to numerous CPS members previously. I found out prior to the AFOS championship that the hot shoe connection didn't work with any EOS Speedlite and I needed to use my 540EZ for this event, hence the RS was chosen. For the photo of Yan Zi playing the piano, it was shot at the 105mm via TTL flash illumination in Tv mode. Next, the group photo was photographed at the 35mm setting, also with TTL in Tv mode. The harsh shadow appearing in the individual shot of Yan Zi was unavoidable as bounce flash photography was impossible.

For the portrait of the artiste's manager, it was time to switch over to bounce flash photography. For the earlier shots, bounce flash was impossible to achieve because the ceiling was just too high for any correct exposure to register with the RS model, coupled with the variable maximum aperture of the zoom lens as well as the use of an ISO 100 film. This portrait was shot outside the conference area where a lower ceiling was available. The EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM was already on sale long before both the EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (issue No: 7) and EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (issue No: 1) came into existence for the EF lenses line-up. It is up to you to choose either of these three EF lenseswhen looking for a wide-to-tele zoom lens.
