The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is
the first Canon EF lens to incorporate the Image Stabilizing feature, long before
any of the other IS lenses ever came into existence, including the four super telephoto
USM series. It is therefore not surprising to note that this telephoto zoom can't
handle panning subjects with its IS mode. Even if one tries to use the lens with
its IS mode switched on, the resulting image will not be captured perfectly.

This is because when one pans the camera in order to follow the moving subject, the
IS system will behave as though camera shake is evident due to the movement of the
camera and lens combination, which it will try to compensate for. This will result
in an image that is "neither here nor there" - in other words, if you are
lucky, you may get an acceptably sharp image with a panning background or have both
of the subject/background out of focus! An example is the photo of the two Formula
2000 cars shown above. However, these three-sequence photos of a racing Porsche below,
were shot with the IS mode switched off and the results are a whole lot better!
Finally, the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, like any of the EF telephoto zoom lenses,
can also be used for other subjects, and is not designed only for use exclusively
with its Image Stabilizing feature. The previous examples are of glamour girls, abstracts
and racing cars, so feast your eyes with some of the candid shots that were also
captured with this IS USM zoom lens, below.

When this lens was first introduced, most of my peers were surprised to find that
it cost about the same as the EOS 50E body (still is) - most of them had expected
it to be priced at around the class of the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM. Apart from the EF
28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, this EF 75-300mm IS USM is the other reasonably-priced
lens that features the Image Stabilizing function.
