The EF 28-90mm utilizes a newly-designed
optical system, and the use of aspherical elements further enhances image quality
for the entire zoom area by reducing lens aberrations. Both the USM and DC Motor
lenses use lead-free glass and a smoother zooming operation, as a result of a new
mechanical construction and lubrication system.

The EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 USM incorporates a Micro USM unit that is used to drive the
autofocus system to provide silent operation. Full-time manual focusing is not possible
with this zoom lens as opposed to Canon EF lenses utilizing Ring USM types. In fact,
the only lens that incorporates a Micro USM unit and is able to fine-tune focusing
manually while still in AF mode is the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.
Zooming from one end of the setting to the other is fast and easy. In most shooting
conditions, you will find this lens to be a reliable performer as it allows you to
focus on composition, in addition to AF and shoot (if camera is being used in Full
Auto, Program or PIC modes), as shown in these two photos of the statues of deer
below.

As for its optical quality, there are the good and bad points. The good news is that
you donít have to worry about sharpness, color rendition and contrast as the EF 28-90mm
zoom lens is capable of delivering all these. The bad point here is hardly an issue
with most beginner and amateur photographers - there is a slight barrel distortion
visible at the edges at the 28mm setting of the lens.
The backlit photo as shown above, was shot at Kuala Lumpur's famed Thean Hou Temple,
shows the ability of the EF 28-90mm zoom lens to render the colors accurately as
well as preserving both highlight and shadow details. But look closely, the red pillar
at the extreme left of the photo and you will see the slight barrel distortion evident.
In most case, I don't think this small level of distortion at the 28mm setting is
going todiscourage any beginner or amateur shooter from purchasing this lens.
