The recently introduced EF 28-90mm
f/4-5.6 USM zoom lens may be sold with the new EOS 30/33 cameras as kit forms in
certain European and Asian markets but for those who prefer to buy these EOS models
separately, the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM makes for an excellent companion.
Like the original, the weight has been retained at 375 grams, making it easy to carry
around. It also has the same two-step lens extension that prevents the lens from
obstructing the built-in flash's coverage of EOS models like the entry-level EOS
300 (Rebel 2000), EOS 88 (EOS 3000) to the mid-range versions like the EOS 30/33,
EOS 50/50E (Elan II/IIe) and EOS 5 (EOS A2/A2E).

The EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, like its predecessor, has multiple lens groups
moving during zooming, allowing for excellent delineation to be obtained at all focal
lengths. It also uses a 58mm filter thread and employs Canon's Ring USM lenses, which
allow EOS owners to fine-tune the focus via the FT-M feature. Its front-end barrel
does not rotate, so the use of a polarizer or other special effects filter having
rotating feature is possible.
Zooming from 28mm to the 105mm focal length for candid photography or any news assignment
is one of the easiest tasks ever - just look at these three photos below, the first
shot showed a group photo of local celebrities photographed at the 28mm setting,
then zooming in at the 105mm for a tighter vertical version for the second. The third
was shot at 35mm position, where the local celebrities had a fun time receiving their
Chinese New Year "ang-pows" from the God of Fortune.

Fill-in TTL flash metering in Tv mode was used for all three photos. Since it was
an indoor event where the lighting was too low for available light shooting with
this zoom lens at ISO 100 due to its variable maximum apertures, the fill-in flash
in Tv mode was necessary with Type B EOS cameras. If you have a Type A EOS camera,
shooting such similar events using E-TTL flash metering with any EX-series of Canon
Speedlites is easier since Program AE mode will take care of any fill-in flash requirement.
