Shooting with this lens wide open - f/3.5 at the 28mm setting and f/4.5 at the 105mm position, will give you pictures that are crisp and snappy despite the limited depth-of-field available. The depth-of-field is probably less than two feet at 28mm and f/3.5 settings from a range of 4-6 feet between the camera and subject distance. So if you take a group photo, make sure that all the people are within the confines for clear and sharp shots, as shown in the photo of these Singaporean and Malaysian celebrities comprising Jack Neo, Mark Lee, VJ Soong Ai Ling, singer Miselta Tee and sponsors below.

Soong's vertical photo was also shot via fill-in flash in Tv mode with a Type B EOS camera. The group photo of the local celebrities in the previous page was slightly different because the depth-of-field had been expanded due to the longer distance between the camera and them, hence the increase in the zone of focus.

The EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, just like its predecessor and other Canon EF zoom lenses, is excellent for candid and street photography. The scene at the local bus-stop (below) and the man selling lottery tickets are two such examples.

This zoom lens can also be used with both the Extension Tubes EF 12 and EF 25. The last two photos (above) show how the image looks like when it is photographed with the lens set at its 105mm position and the closest focusing distance while the second is with the EF 25 tube attached. See the difference in the subject's magnification in both photos.

The new EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, excellent as it is, may not be that tempting to most users of the original version. They may be keener to upgrade to either the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM or the L-series EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM. EOS users keen on the new version are most likely those who are planning to upgrade from their existing EF 35-80mm and EF 28-80mm entry-level zoom lenses.
