When the Power Booster PB-E2 is fitted to the EOS-3 camera,
the maximum firing rate of 7 frames-per-second is possible when used in the Manual
Focus, One Shot AF or focus-tracking AI Servo AF modes -- provided the PB-E2 is loaded
with its rechargeable (optional) Ni-MH Pack NP-E2.
The PB-E2 has its own shutter button for vertical shooting just like the Power Drive
Booster E1 for the EOS-1N, a Main Dial, AE Lock Button, FE Lock Button and a separate
focusing point selector. It can also be used with the EOS-1/EOS-1N cameras but without
the features of the vertical grip's new controls except for the shutter and AE Lock
buttons. However, the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 cannot be used when the PB-E2 is attached
to the EOS-1/1N cameras. The EOS-1N's own Power Drive Booster E1 will also work with
the EOS-3.
With the exceptions of selecting both the multiple exposure and the film advance
modes, practically all the modes to be set in the EOS-3 are the same as the EOS-1N
pro camera. To select the film advance mode from Single Frame to Continuous-High
(CH) or Continuous-Low (CL) to Self Timer of 2 or 10 seconds delay on the EOS 3 is
activated by pressing both the Shooting and Exposure Compensation buttons on the
top left of the camera.
To activate the multiple exposure feature, the button to select on the EOS-3 is located
inside the palm door enclosure from the right side of the body, just like the button
which is used to select the film advance mode in the EOS-1N camera .
The EOS-3 feels and behaves just like the EOS-1N -- an important factor to consider
for current users of the pro-level EOS camera. By making the EOS-3 to closely resemble
the EOS-1N, Canon has made the new camera to be the first EOS model since the 35mm
AF EOS 600/630 versions of Spring '89 that were aimed for the advanced amateur photographers
that does not include a built-in pop-up flash.
Among the 45 focusing points of the EOS-3, 38 are sensitive to horizontal
or diagonal lines with f/5.6 or faster lenses. Six of the seven central points are
high precision cross-type sensors with f/2.8 or faster lenses. The center AF point
is the most functional of all, providing high precision cross-type performance with
f/4 and faster lenses.
The center AF point's versatile factor also made it possible in maintaining standard
AF operations with maximum apertures as small as f/8! Autofocus is possible with
EF lenses like the EF 300mm f/4L USM and EF 600mm f/4L USM when the Extender EF 2x
is attached to them.
As opposed to both the EOS 5 and EOS-1N cameras having 16-zone Evaluative Metering
System, the EOS-3 has a 21-zone Evaluative Metering System in addition to Partial,
Spot, AF-linked Spot, Multi-Spot and the conventional Center-Weighted Average metering
options. All six metering modes use the camera's 21-zone Evaluative Metering Sensor.
