Analog Camera
SLR Series - EOS 3

Introduction

The Spot metering option of the EOS-3 is remarkable. Used alone without any alterations via the Custom Functions (CF No: 13), the optimum point for the Spot metering to read the light levels is confined to the center 2.4 % spot of the viewfinder area. Using CF No: 13-1, the Spot metering can be expanded to include any one of the 11 eye-selectable AF-point scattered within the Area AF ellipse that can be selected either normally or with the eye.

This method is different from the version available on the EOS-1N that only permits the Spot metering to be linked to any of the manually selected sensor of the 5-point AF sensors. The method on the EOS-3 permits the CF-altered Spot metering option to be linked to any of the 11 eye-selectable AF points depending on which point your eye choose to look at -- automatically.

Multi-Spot Metering was last used in the manual focus Canon T90 camera of 1986. Since then, no other Canon 35mm SLR camera has had this feature again. The EOS-3 has brought back this feature. Like the T90, the Multi-Spot option of the EOS-3 can take meter readings up to eight different spots and average the readings out for the final exposure.

Image (Loading...)The Center-Weighted Average metering, unlike the EOS-1N which needs to be selected via Custom Function (CF) No: 8, is selectable from the EOS-3 via the Metering-select button located on the top left of the camera.

It has an additional 3 more built-in Custom Functions over the EOS-1N's 14 types with its CF No: 8 now having a new function since the Center-Weighted Average metering is no longer needed to be selected from it. The new CF No: 8-1 give an option of reversing the frame counter sequence on the LCD panel on counting from No: 36-down rather than the standard frame No: 1-up.

Another notable feature that is available only on the EOS-3 is the frame counter countdown sequence inside the viewfinder from 36 down to 0 if the loaded film is a 36-exposure roll. Other EOS cameras like the EOS-1N and EOS 5 would only starts their frame counter sequences countdown inside their viewfinders when there are 9 frames left whether the film loaded is of the 12, 24 or 36-exposure rolls.

The same Custom Function No: 8-1 will also reverse the frame countdown inside the viewfinder counter from No: 1-up to 36-down. Custom Function No: 15-1 enables the EOS-3 to be set for 2nd curtain flash synchronization when the camera is used with other Canon EX-Series Speedlites that do not have the 2nd curtain sync feature built-in, like the 220EX and 380EX.

The EOS 3 has three eye calibration channels for three users or for one, to calibrate his/her eyes under three different conditions. For example: CAL 1 for the naked eye, CAL 2 for when wearing eyeglasses and CAL 3 when using contact lens.

The eye calibration method on the EOS-3 is the same as those used for both the EOS 5 and EOS 50E cameras. For example: the same user can calibrate his/her eye repeatedly on the same channel under different shooting conditions (outdoors, indoors, at night, etc.) for improved and more precise Eye-Controlled Focus reactions especially when the brightness of the surrounding atmosphere changed from time to time.
