How often have you taken a fantastically atmospheric shot only to have it come back from the developer's looking disappointingly ordinary? That's where Depth-of-field Preview comes in. Depth-of-field is the area of sharpness around the focusing point. Professionals use Depth-of-field to create atmosphere and mood in their photographs. With the EOS 300's Depth-of-field preview button, you can too. It allows you to see, through the lens, exactly what will and won't be in focus. Which means you'll be able to create precisely the mood you want, before you take the shot. Just like the picture of the Bedouin woman above. The way the background falls away until it becomes as diaphanous and mysterious as the veil she's wearing. If everything had been in sharp focus, there would have been no intrigue in the shot. As it is, your eye's drawn in, captured by the emotion of the moment. Depth-of-field preview: indispensable for serious photographers, an invaluable tool for newcomers to SLR technology.
