AIM control
AIM (Advanced Integrated Multipoint) control is a Canon system which creates a link
between the focusing and exposure metering functions of the camera. The focusing
system tells the exposure system where the subject is positioned, so that light readings
can be analysed more accurately. The result is better exposure, even when the subject
is not in the centre of the frame.
Focusing modes
The EOS 500N has two focusing modes, selected automatically by the camera to suit
the picture-taking mode. One Shot AF focuses the lens, then locks the focus so that
it does not change. This is ideal for static and slow-moving subjects. Al Servo AF
is used for action photography. If the camera senses that the subject is moving,
it switches from One Shot AF to Predictive AF. This adjusts the focus to follow the
subject. You can also focus manually.
Selecting the focusing modes
The EOS 500N has three focusing points spread across the frame. This makes it easier
to focus on off-centre subjects, and keep moving subjects within the AF frame. The
camera will select the active focusing point automatically, or you can choose one
of the points manually.
Focus lock
In One Shot AF mode, you can focus on one part of the subject, lock the focus, and
then change the composition of the image before taking a picture.
Specifications
Evaluative metering
Meter readings are taken from six different areas of the scene. A built-in computer
then compares these readings with a library of typical scenes. In this way the camera
is able to detect light or dark backgrounds, or other difficult situations, and adjust
the exposure accordingly.
Partial metering
Partial metering uses the central 9.5% of the picture area. This allows you to take
the reading from the important part of the subject, ignoring light or dark backgrounds.
AE Lock
There will be times when the best area for a meter reading is not in the field-of-view.
This is not a problem. Simply take the reading from the area and press the AE Lock
button to hold the value in the camera memory. You can then recompose the image before
shooting. Manual exposure compensation is also available.
Command Dial
The central control of the EOS 500N is the Command Dial. This selects the shooting
mode and camera features such as film speed setting and mid-roll rewind specifications
